A Coffee Break of Inspirational Leadership: Being Goodish

A few months ago, I learned a new phrase - being goodish.

It didn't take much reflection to realize that this phrase rocks. Really. But what it really means and stands for is so much more. As a working mom, I can say that I've struggled with that balance in life - trying to be all to everyone and to myself at the same time. Possible? No.

Then there's that word perfect that we've all decided to retire, unless we are talking about an Olympic gymnastic score or if we're referring to a gingerbread man. But being goodish is a phrase close to perfection, just in being a phrase and not because it refers to perfection - but I digress.

Being goodish is about growth and effort. Its about becoming better at noticing our own mistakes. Learning from them. Stop explaining away mistakes. Self-correcting. Allowing growth to get better or more...well...goodish.

I think deep down inside most reflective leaders are fighting for the good person identity. I mean, we don't want to be "the bad guy." We all want to be liked. Some want to be loved and revered, but not sure how possible that is. But being an ethical leaders and looking at the implications and unintended consequences of our decisions is what being a learning, reflecting, thriving leader is all about. Right?

See - its about being goodish.

Because when we're not being goodish, we are not allowing room for personal growth. Whether it be in improving our parenting skills or seeking new hobbies that better provide that mental down time, or whether it be taking reading a new industry book or participating in an online course that expands our repertoire, we have to learn to be a learner and partaker in life in a fluid manner. Let go of being a good person and seek to be good as it comes to you.

Check this out. And...hey....happy Monday!

Take a look at this article about being goodish rather than just good. It has some great insights, if you're interested. It is a long article...but a good read nonetheless.

Take a look and read it HERE.

In this Ted Talk, Dolly Chugh talks about how letting good of being good is...well...good. Its 11 minutes and her thoughtful ponderings around ethics and biases give food for thought.

* Share it.

Can you print these and share them? Notes to colleagues on key topics like knowing they are cared for and that there is something to look for beyond perfection and greatness. Goodish is really very good.

And its a new year, so consider how many ways you can use 2019 to promote more goodness and support for others. Think about sharing in a new way if you have not done so already. Print a few of these on colored cardstock …. practically free!

Here are a couple to consider…. and to give frequently. It’s up to us to remind others that its okay to feel good and be...goodish.

Now go slay yet another week!
